Do You Think Men Lose Weight Faster Than Women?

Weight loss topic is always an ongoing interest among all of us. You may find someone you have knew seems to be more likely to lose weight than one another. What makes up this individual difference? Research has shown that uncontrollable factors like genetics and age can be contributing, as well as the gender difference. So, do you think men lose weight faster than women?

Besides physiological reasons which aren’t always true long-term, here are some reasons for differences in weight loss between men and women.

Hormones

We all know that women primarily have estrogen and progesterone hormones, while men have primarily testosterone hormone. But, you might not be knowing that these hormones have linked to where fat is stored In our body. In fact, this is the factor that why men and women tend to focus on different body parts in term of weight loss. This is because testosterone promotes fat storage around the belly (apple shape), and estrogen mainly promotes fat storage around the lower body and hips (pear shape). Also, women’s hormones promote a higher fat storage than testosterone which is why women naturally have higher body fat percentages than men.

Metabolic Rate

In general, men are biologically set up to have higher metabolic rate and thus they burn calories faster than women. Hormones play a part in this difference, again. But, this is also because men have a larger body size in average and more muscles mass in comparison to women. Importantly, most women go on low calories diet which may lower their metabolic rates.

But this is not long-term

According to a 2014 study from British Journal of Nutrition studying women and men who went through 4 different commercial weight loss programs, the results had shown the men had lost twice as much fat-free mass and three times as much fat mass than women for each diet. So, although men lost more weight, they lost more muscle because they had more to start with. Over time, fat-free mass loss in men was balanced out with the women. At the end of the study, weight loss between both genders was similar.

5 Reasons Why College Students Should Start Running Every Day

Physical exercise is not as boring and tiresome as most people perceive it. It can actually be fun; all one needs to do is to understand its importance. There is a wide range of physical activities so why running? It’s free! Who wouldn’t like saving some dollars and still achieve the same results as one who has paid for a gym? You also enjoy the liberty to run as long as you wish, unlike the treadmill which has a limited time. One more thing, you do not need to be a professional to enjoy it. Every person should incorporate running into their schedule since the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

So how will running help a college student?

  • Improves Memory Retention and Brain Development

Memory retention is very important to students since they constantly need to remember all content learned. Stress reduces the brain’s ability to process and retain information. According to a 2010 research done by Cambridge neuroscientists on the physical activity of mice, running helps in the growth of brain cells associated with memory retention. Therefore, students who run for at least 30 minutes daily remember almost twice as much since the body releases dopamine and norepinephrine which increases attention and retention while learning. The implication – students who are physically active perform better than those who don’t.

  • Gives You a Chance to Enjoy Time Alone

Lecture halls and college hostels are mostly noisy and crowded. Running gives you time away from all the hustle and an opportunity to meditate. Meditation is known to completely free our minds from all the happenings around us and focus on only one thing. This will relieve you of stress and depression. Research has found that running helps in the production of hormones that help to lift one’s mood, leaving you with a balanced mindset. You also get the chance to enjoy the fresh air and the outdoor breeze. Additionally, you get a better view of your surrounding while running – this mostly helps the students who are new in the area.

  • Helps in Socializing

Once you’ve made running part of your daily schedule, you are bound to make some new friends along the way. These friends act as running mates and offer encouragement to keep going even when it seems tough. You may also be seen as an inspiration by people who have often been interested in taking a morning run but are often put off by weather conditions or laziness. Such people will likely join the person who has the same goals as them. There is also a possibility of growth where some people start by running for fun and end up forming a club where you meet like-minded people. You may also start a blog to share your experiences (you can engage a college essay writer as a start if you are not familiar with writing).

  • It Keeps You Healthy and Boosts Confidence

Exercising regularly, as opposed to browsing site after site all day, acts as an energy boost since most college students often feel tired and sluggish. It also helps to strengthen bones and build lean muscles and reduces the chances of getting heart diseases since it aids in regulating the blood flow. Additionally, it regulates cholesterol levels which are the major cause of heart problems. Running also boosts metabolism leading to weight loss and builds muscles. According to David Felson, a researcher from Boston University, running improves knee health. Surprising huh? For those that have a problem with their bowel movements, running helps by contracting the intestinal muscles.

90% of the people who run listen to music while at it. Music takes away all the worries leaving one feeling strong and confident. Since running helps in building lean muscles and a well-toned body, you will comfortably fit into that body-hugging dress that you like. Who wouldn’t want that? That goes a long way in boosting your confidence.

  • Keeps You Alert

Adding a running routine to your schedule keeps you on your toes since there is a specific time to run and duration. This helps you arrange your activities well to accommodate classes, leisure and running, and leaves no chance for postponing things. Learning how to follow a tight schedule gives the student a sense of discipline. Running also keeps the mind alert. Hence, you’re more attentive.

30% of American adults experience insomnia – this is according to ‘sleep’ medicine. A study carried out on a group of old people also showed that those who worked out even a little took less time to fall asleep as compared to those who did nothing. Having in mind that good sleep is essential to having a productive day, why not just have a run?

Conclusion

Running, like any other physical activity, is not easy especially at the beginning. However, from the immense benefits that come from running for even a few minutes, it’s worth the hustle. College students should really consider including a thirty minute run into their daily routine.

Considering the many advantages of running, are you willing to try taking a 30-minute run? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section.

MILO Marathon Turns 42

The National MILO Marathon is all set for its 42nd season of discovering the best runners in the Philippines.  An expected 150,000 runners are expected to sign up in the country’s most durable and prestigious footrace.

The National Finals will be held in Laoag City on December 9 marking the event’s return to Luzon after stops in Iloilo and Cebu the past two years.  2018 is also the 200th anniversary of the founding of the province of Ilocos Norte and the City of Laoag so expect an equally scenic and challenging course that will pass through the areas major historical and tourist attractions.

Aside from cash prizes and gifts from sponsors, this year’s MILO Marathon King and Queen will have a shot at representing the country in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and also compete in another overseas event according to Dr. Philip Ella Juico of the PATAFA.  Reigning MILO King Jeorge Andrade of Davao was sent and emerged as the champion in last month’s Borneo Marathon.

In order to find out who will get to race with Andrade and MILO Queen Mary Joy Tabal, a series of 10 regional qualifying races will be held beginning in Urdaneta City, Pangasinana on July 15 followed by the much-awaited Metro Manila race at the SM Mall of Asia on July 29.  For a change, runners will be negotiating a totally new route as the race will not traverse Roxas Boulevard anymore upon advice of the MMDA and instead stretch further down Bayani Road in Fort Bonifacio.

Succeeding races will be hosted by the cities of Tarlac (August 25), Batangas (September 16), Lucena (September 30), Iloilo (October 7), Cebu (October 14), General Santos (October 21), Butuan (November 11) and Cagayan de Oro (November 18).  The earlier than usual announcement will accord runners more time to prepare especially for the longer distances.

Instead of the traditional shirt and towel, all finishers of 42 and 21 kilometers within the cut-off time will be rewarded with a training hoodie plus a medal and loot bag.  Onsite registration is ongoing at Landmark branches in Makati, Trinoma and Alabang while online registration and more information may be found at www.milo.com.ph and www.runrio.com.

The MILO Marathon will also continue its advocacy of providing free rubber shoes to poor but deserving public school children in the host cities in coordination with the Department of Education.  This year, MILO will also be donating basketballs in order to involve more children in sports as they seek to build champions not just in sports but also in life.

Run for the Oceans (by Rebekah Ong)

Saturday, 9 June 2018 was my 2nd Tribe run with the Adidas Runners (AR) Singapore and it’s was themed event labelled “Run for the Oceans”. It was a global running movement that uses the power of sport to raise awareness for the threat of marine plastic pollution.

Above: Pre-run photos around the event site

A lot of us can’t go without our daily lives without using or having that is made of plastic. It is used in practically everything from our phones to the packaging of products like our food when we go ‘da bao’ our lunches etc. But for all the benefits plastic has given us, disposing of products – particularly those designed to be used only once, such as packaging – has become a major environmental issue because of the carelessness of its disposal.

Plastic pollution is an alarming problem for the environment because of the sheer rate that it keeps entering our oceans every year. Not only are plastics hard to break down, it leaves particles that can be harmful to the living things in the ocean while breaking down. Marine mammals have also been found to be entangled in the marine litter and over 90% of all seabirds have plastic pieces in their stomachs. These are just some of the dangers of plastics and the ocean.

Today’s event takes place at Aloha Sea Sports Center, East Coast Park (ECP) with registration starting at 07:00hrs. Registered participants were each given an AR Run for the Oceans event tee, an Adidas water bottle &  a nice black canvas bag and all of us were pleasantly surprised. After we have checked in and deposited our bags, we headed out to the beach area to enjoy the cooling morning weather and take some photos around the event site.

Today’s event was a big one with not only a big turn out by the participants but there were some local talents from the media coming also to support the event. The event was emceed by 98.7 FM’s Joakim Gomez and Kimberly Wang! A short sharing session by 2 dive enthusiasts Victoria and Eugenia shared their experience on diving and how they saw plastic pollution affect the ocean. Before the event started, both the emcees encouraged everyone to download and track our run using the RUNTASTIC app as Adidas will be donating $1 USD  for every kilometre for the first million kilometer that is clocked in between 8 June to 8 July 2018. The money will then go directly to the Parley Ocean Plastic Program to further cut into the pollution problems.

The actual run was flagged off around 8 am and it was lead by AR Singapore Captains and Co-Captains with all the participants following behind. Though it was a late start, it was still pretty cooling as much of ECP was shaded. I ran together with my running buddies Calvin & Yi Hsiu and it was nice to have their company. ECP was the perfect location for this event because of the beautiful views of the beaches and sea and while running along the route, it gives you time to reflect at how important it is for us to help play our part in fighting plastic pollution, if not nice beaches like these will cease to exist in the future and so will marine life that thrive in these oceans.

Above Photos: Runsociety

Once all of us had completed the run, we all treated to nice, cold cans of Pocari Sweat drinks and a simple breakfast buffet which included, broccoli & cauliflower casserole, fresh fruit sticks, bruschetta and many more other yummilious goodies! That was definitely a welcomed treat as many of us were hungry.

Overall, it was a great way to start my weekend. I’m sooo happy that I managed to do my part in today’s event even though how small it may be. Big thanks to Adidas Singapore for organising this meaningful event!

My Laguna Phuket Marathon 2018 [5km & HM] (by Lingderella)

Yes! Finally another runcation and it’s Willis and my first time to Phuket! Thanks to Justina and Chee Beng for bringing us around Phuket ? It’s their 3rd time running in Laguna Phuket Marathon and maybe they would be back again next year like tio sorcery? ?

It’s not the right time of the month for me and I was in a lot of pain. I’m cursing a lot on the first day of the trip and I even had the thought that I would be better at home and recuperate. It seriously felt as if I’m going to give birth to a baby(though I don’t know how giving birth feels ?) as the pain is so intense. I assumed the pain was the reason that I vomited out my breakfast on the plane and then the in-flight meal after we touched down Phuket while on the ride to our stay ? I don’t get air sick usually. I thought GG, there goes my holiday ?

Luckily after a few dose of pain killers I felt much better already and hoped that my runs will be fine. We stayed at Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort, it’s an awesome stay and only about 5 minutes walk to the race site which also was the REPC location. REPC was efficient as we can check our bib number beforehand on their website and fill up a form so we just need to pass the volunteers our form and they go trace accordingly to our bib number. They are so sweet, our bib and race singlet are already put inside an envelope. After collecting our race pack, we proceed to a counter for us to check whether the timing chip is working or not. It’s the 13th Laguna Phuket Marathon this time. Justina and Chee Beng participated in the 5km and full marathon category while Willis and I participated in the 5km and the half marathon category. I didn’t really put in much effort in my trainings and actually was even using this half marathon as a LSD for Gold Coast Marathon (Cross my fingers and hope that the Gold Coast trip will still be happening and goes on smoothly) as I already paid a coach for the runcation package for the GCM but till now seems like air tickets and accommodations not even settled though its only just about 2 weeks away already.

Heard from Justina that last year, even the Thai Princess participated in the half marathon category and have bodyguards running by her side! ? I imagined it was somewhat similar to Kim Jong Un’s “jogging bodyguards” lah though heard that the Thai Princess’s bodyguards drop out after a few kilometers ?

On Saturday there’s a Pasta party lunch for the half marathon and full marathon runners, sort of carbo loading for the runners and the emcee said that there were runners from more than 50 countries and 260 runners from Singapore participating in the various categories! That’s a lot Singaporeans! ? And the very same day there’s the kids 2km, 5km and 10km category whereas the half marathon and full marathon race was on Sunday. The 5km were flagged off at 5.20pm. There’s a bit of drizzling but weather felt good to me as I prefer rain than sun. Nothing interesting or any nice sceneries along the route. The 5km route even have 2 hydration points. And there’s a lot of photographers along the way.

On Sunday morning, Willis and I just reached race site minutes before flag off. I was hoping that the route could bring us more scenery than the 5km route but it was quite disappointing as we only ran pass villages, streets and houses, plantations and kampungs. It’s just very similar to the Camel Muar I ran in Malaysia last year except this time with some buffaloes and chickens along the way. No pretty scenery like I’ve imagined with pretty beaches and sound of waves hitting the shores. Maybe only the full marathon runners had enjoyed prettier sceneries.

Flag off for the half marathon was at 5.30am, which was Singapore’s 6.30am. But luckily the sunrise is not so early and I didn’t felt much sun at all the entire run. It was a quite a heavy drizzle when flag off but it stopped shortly luckily. Though its not hot or humid but its not cooling either and I can see many runners already fully soaked in sweat just after the first few kilometers into the run.

The hydration points were all well stocked up with icy cold Gatorade of different flavors and also icy cold water as well. Yes! All the hydration points have cold water and nearly all their hydration points after 10km I realised offered sponges that were soaked in cold water and they also offered fruits such as bananas and watermelons! ? The full marathon runners even had coconuts! Everything’s cold, their gels provided were also cold! Willis and I also enjoyed the popsicle at one of the hydration point which we thought needed money at first but was free of charge ?

I took sponges at all the hydration points to keep myself cool though its quite unglam for me lah because I just kiap it with my sports bra though I don’t know whether it helps in cooling me down or not but it definitely feels shiok ? Though the entire route I noticed only just a van, which is their toilet. Maybe they had more than just one throughout the route just that I didn’t notice it and there’s no direction signs as well.

Medals is really pretty and it spins! There’s massage available at the race village and food provided for the runners as well. There’s finisher tee for both the full and half marathon as well and results were out on their website as soon as we completed the run ? Really appreciate my dear Willis for running by my side all along motivating me ❤ I will definitely want to go Thailand to have a runcation again but maybe not Laguna Phuket as there’s still so many places I had yet been to.

Meet Zhao De of V8Runners

Hello all! I am Zhao De, turning 36 this year, with chubby cheeks and extra fats around my waistline. I used to do multi-sports in my tertiary days, representing my school for IVP tournaments in Kayaking, Dragon-boating and Triathlon. My constant running, swimming, cycling and gym training helped me to keep in shape until 2 years ago.

I took the sabbatical leave to take care of my newborn baby as my wife’s work requires her to travel frequently. During that period, I felt stressed, sleepless and anxious. I paid little attention to what I ate, stopped exercising and eventually gained a lot of weight. I started to experience difficulty in breathing and got tired easily.

In mid-2017, I was called up for IPPT- FFI from my NS reservist unit. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol level and obesity. It was alarming!  Immediately, I started my diet plan by cutting down carbohydrates and sweets. I also instilled a daily exercise regime by going for slow jogs around my estate. 2 months later, I was recalled back to the medical centre. My medical tests showed a slight improvement in my blood pressure (130/90). My weight also decreased from 90kg to 85kg. For this time, the Medical Officer endorsed my IPPT-FFI. In order to keep up with the yearly check, I better improve my overall fitness, health and maintain a healthy BMI. The message is clear, I need to stay fit to take care of my family.

I learnt about V8Runners from Grace and Ivan who are my close friends, they recently moved to Vue 8 Residence. Grace & Ivan invited me to join V8Runners for their weekly Sunday morning runs at 7 am. This interest group was formed by Vue 8 residents, promoting fitness and health among their residents. The first time I met the founders, Stanley and Jade, I immediately hit it off with them. They are also running shoe lovers! On top of that, I also formed close bonds with new friends who share common topics. I felt happier and less fatigue after these months of training. Most importantly, my blood pressure and cholesterol level are now in the normal range!

I have participated in the weekly runs since October 2017, every session is fun and enjoyable. The weekly session comprises of warm-up, core muscles strengthening exercises and in between some yoga! To date, we have completed many long distance runs, hill runs, stairs climbing and trail runs. In each run, I will try to improve my intensity, distance and consistency. I honestly feel that I will stay with the V8Runners forever as I enjoy their camaraderie!

Our team have participated in 2XU Half Marathon, Sundown Marathon and The Performance Series together. I hope that in the long run, we will also participate in overseas running events.

Run for fitness and health, say NO to diabetes!

Running Skyward: National Vertical Marathon 2018 [Men’s Open] (by Austin)

Instead of trying to make your life perfect, give yourself the freedom to make it an adventure, and go ever upward.

– Drew Houston, Co-founder & CEO of Dropbox

This impactful quote from Drew Houston that I stumbled upon online resonated deeply with my current state of self-discovery, which set me thinking. In response, I rose up to the challenge (pun intended) and registered for the National Vertical Marathon 2018; I wanted to keep to my personal goal this year – seizing new opportunities and chasing new experiences.

Source: http://nvm.ntusportsclub.sg/

The National Vertical Marathon (NVM) was first conceived in 1994, by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Sports Club. An alternative way to race, participants ascend the entirety of a skyscraper, instead of flat-road running. Being an NTU undergraduate myself, I had yet another reason to support this event. This time, I rounded up several friends from NTU and my brother Justin to register along with me in the Men’s Open Race Category. For the most of us, including myself, were first-timer-goers for the NVM.

In this year’s NVM, participants were challenged to scale the stairs of a 37-storey-high building: Guoco Tower, Tanjong Pagar Centre. There was a wide selection of race categories to choose from and were mainly grouped according to the Individual, Team and Relay categories. Some were more unconventional but creative, such as the Lover’s Challenge and the Family Fun Race.

Race Day – 3 June 2018

I arrived at Tanjong Pagar Centre at around 8:45 am and met up with my friends soon after. We then headed to the registration booth to collect our Race T-shirt and RFID Race Bib. Registration was a rather smooth process, with multiple counters available for participants to approach. Many volunteers were stationed around the booth – essential for an easy registration flow. There wasn’t much of a queue during the time I registered, which was probably due to the pre-assigned timings as mentioned in the registration email. I was assigned to register at 8:57 am, so I had no qualms throughout this whole process.

My Race T-shirt and Race Bib

Upon receiving our race items, we changed into our Race T-shirts, pinned on our Race Tags did some light stretching to ready ourselves.

At around 9:30 am, we were called to the gathering area to be split into our details. My friends and I were put into the same detail and lined up to start our race. Each 5-man detail was released at intervals of every few minutes. I was impressed with the level of management and coordination of details.

Before long, the race horn sounded and we were off. We began with a slight jog just to warm up before arriving at the stairwell. Psyched for the race, most of us began the climb with large strides, skipping one step as we go.

As the race proceeded, several posters on the walls reminded us of the remaining floors to check our progress. My group of friends gradually split up, with each going at their own paces. At around the halfway mark, my legs had too much lactic acid built up and I was forced to a quick walk – no more skipping steps for me. In all honesty, it looked way easier than it actually was and I was underestimating it way too much. The stairwell was also stuffy – with little to no ventilation.

However, this was just what I signed up for – a new experience! Rather than chasing excellence, I was chasing after a different challenge, which makes the whole experience much more worthwhile.

Me at the halfway mark

Hydration points were stationed at every 10 flights of stairs, which provided plain water in cups. Every few floors, there would be a volunteer supporter to giving encouragement to the participants.

Nearing the top, I noticed everyone around me picking up speed to give that last push for the finish and I followed suit. That last burst of motivation was all I need to muster a sprint up the remaining few flights of stairs. With the final few quick strides, I completed the race alongside my brother, Justin.

A familiar sense of accomplishment swelled within me, just like every other race I completed, no matter how easy or tough. At the top, my friends and I huddled for a group photo and started sharing with each other about the experience. Everything felt in-place but something was amiss: a breathtaking view! Or at the very least a view from a balcony. To our disappointment, we were only ushered to a lift lobby to take the lifts down. A friend of mine commented that last year’s race rewarded participants with a view from the top, unlike this year.

Upon exiting the lift at ground level, we were given our finisher medals and some isotonic drinks and joined in with the crowd at the race carnival. Among all the festivity, I noticed race participants were either playing booth games, queueing for snacks redemption, taking photos at a photo booth or getting their caricatures drawn. All these were given complimentary to each race participant. Some snacks I redeemed for myself were Kacang Putih, Ice Cream and Muah Chee (breakfast was settled!). There were some live singing performances on stage throughout the carnival, which really brought the whole atmosphere of a fiesta.

Our group took some commemorative photos together and collected our goodie bags thereafter. These goodie bags were packed to the brim with mostly items from event sponsors.

After spotting some familiar faces from NTU and catching up with them, we went to collect our deposited baggage. Once again, we had another quick and easy baggage collection with no queue.

On the whole, NVM 2018 was considerably well-executed for a student-run initiative. Despite the minor disappointment of not having a view at the top, the race adequately brought across the whole idea of an alternative to running. One great point worth mentioning was the smooth management of details of the various categories, which can possibly be a logistical nightmare. I would recommend the NVM to any runner who seeks to try a different form of race. Kudos to NVM and NTU Sports Club!

Final Thoughts

“Attitude, Aptitude, Altitude” was the tagline for this year’s NVM, which challenges us to approach trials and tribulations with the right attitude, test the limits of our aptitude and reach a new level of altitude.

Hopefully, this would provide some inspiration to you not just in running, but also in the exciting roller-coaster of a race: life. As Drew Houston had mentioned, embrace the adventure and run skyward.

Till my next write-up, continue chasing after new experiences, God bless and have a great day ahead!

Slow Down & Appreciate

Wow! It’s been sometime time since my last blog post on the JustRunLah! website. Time really flies in 2018 and we are already at the mid-year mark. So far, 2018 hasn’t been the best for me in the fitness training as I’ve injured myself and sometimes even jogging has been challenging for me.

An injury doesn’t mean that you should stop all workouts but find sometimes suitable that won’t aggravate your injury. For me, it was brisk walking rather than my normal jogs or runs. Yes, it’s a bit of a pace change but slowing down had its pros. You get to re-discover things again and enjoy and appreciate your surroundings. It is definitely a workout!

Recently, I did two back to back 10KM brisk walk sessions. The first was a relaxed exploration of Punggol Waterway all the way to Coney Island and back. Having to slow down really allowed me to admire the scenic surroundings that this place has to offer. Normally, when I come to the Punggol Waterway area, it would be for run events and during these times, I would be engrossed in the completing the race. This time, I managed to catch the beautiful sunrise and enjoy the calmness the place has to offer. Check out these photos that I took during my walk.

The other 10KM brisk walk session was during the Income Eco Run; as I was still recovering, I had decided to brisk walk all the way with to the FINISH line with my friend, Yi Hsiu. Walking 10KM without company would be a challenge but thankfully, we motivated each other to keep moving.

The Income Eco Run event is definitely one of my all-time favourite events! It’s always very well-organised, from the Race Entry Pack Collection (REPC) to the actual race day! It is also one of the most reasonable priced runs promoting environmental conservation and they aim to encourage everyone to play their part in supporting the cause. Though it was a brisk walk/ jogging session for me, I completed 10KM in 1hr 35 mins and that includes my water breaks along the way. Check out my photos from the event!

Well, I thought I’d sharing what my brisk walking experience during my recovery would provide a good alternative as a workout for those who are recovering from an injury or just looking for a low impact workout. Hope my write-up also triggers some exploration trips. Till my next write up, take care and continue to stay happy!

Exotic location for a run/walk: Bukit Batok Nature Park

A Place for Your Peaceful Nature Walk

The 36-hectare Bukit Batok Nature Park offers a trail that meanders through a well-established secondary forest. As you walk through the forest, look out for interesting flora and fauna. Check out the walking guide on Singapore National Park website.

The Bukit Batok Nature Park holds some historical significance. It was once mined for granite. As you embark on the ascent to the top of the hill, stop at the lookout points that offer vantage views of the quarry pool. This trail also takes you to a war memorial at the top of the hill, and to the quarry pool at its foot.

There are many ways to explore the Bukit Batok Nature Park. You can take a leisurely stroll on the meandering footpaths which lead you to the secondary forest and admire the beauty of the lush greenery or if you want to have a good workout, you can run on the park’s undulating terrain. You can even hike through the forest and enjoy the serene ambience of the surroundings.

A Night Racing Adventure: OSIM Sundown Marathon 2018 [10km]

10 km Challenge Flag-off

-SLEEP CAN WAIT-

This catchphrase caught my attention immediately and to any other race enthusiast, it is definitely not unheard-of. Indeed, as I registered for the 10 km category, I knew it was going to be one of those night races that required sacrificing some sleep. Being an undergraduate, I knew all too well how important sleep can be.

Nonetheless, I was thrilled at the idea of a large group of people forgoing sleep for their passion – running. I just had to be part of this experience! So I gathered my closest running companions, which were none other than my Dad, (a.k.a SY) and twin brother, Justin, to register for the 10km race category.

Race Day

It was 19 May – race day. Knowing that it was going to be a long night ahead, I had a late dinner consisting of a larger portion of carbs. As the race timing drew closer, I ensured all my running gear were in good condition and charged my wireless headphones and TomTom GPS watch. With everything in check, the three of us set off for the race at around 8:30 pm.

This year’s iteration of OSIM Sundown Marathon was held at the F1 Pit Building, same as previous years. When we arrived at around 9:30 pm, we were greeted with a bustling race carnival. The crowd mostly comprised 5 km finishers (which I knew from their shiny finisher medals) and some other early 10 km runners just like us. Some were browsing the running gear for sale, others doing some serious stretching and others chatting with their fellow running associates. We snapped a group photo together and got some water at the hydration booth before queueing at the start pen.

The Race

With loud music from a live DJ and cheers, the 10 km challenge race began on a high. We started the race with the second wave of runners due to the long queue. However, the starting path was wide and spacious, allowing us to overtake some walkers. Justin and I split up with my Dad to run at different paces.

The night race was on, and as I paced along with the second wave, I felt strangely alive. There was something about having a group of strangers united through running, despite the late flag-off timing. The darkness of a night race also somewhat gave an atmosphere of fun and excitement.

As the race proceeded, the path winded into several choke points, where I faced several problems of walkers holding up the way or fast runners trying to jostle their way through the narrow passages. I then took a mental note to be in the first wave flag-off to prevent all this inconvenience.

There were several hydration points at intervals of 2-3 km along the race route, which I felt was just sufficient. Each hydration point had both options of POCARI Sweat Drinks and plain water.

The race route extended a little over the 10 km distance mark at 10.9 km, according to my GPS watch. This could be revised to better allow runners to track a more accurate PB for themselves. As for myself, I felt a little cheated when the route took an extra turn after the Helix Bridge before ending off at the finishing line. However, I was no competitive runner and didn’t mind getting in a little more cardio for myself.

After finishing, there were numerous lanes to collect finisher medals and post-race running entitlements with none being congested. This came across as a rather pleasant surprise. We were each issued a finisher medal, a can of POCARI Sweat drink, a banana and a bottle of plain water.

Post-race Experience

After leaving the finish line, I did some light cool-down stretches and met up with my Dad and Justin. We commemorated our 10 km finish with some photos with our medals.

Post-race Group Photo

Soon after we took the photos, I replenished my energy by finishing my banana and drinks and did some extra stretching. We took a quick tour around the carnival area once more and left the area as it was getting late – almost 12:00 am! However, as we left, I noticed many fresh-looking runners entering, who were probably there for the 21.1 km race category. The traffic leaving the F1 Pit Building area was rather heavy but that was understandable considering the road closures.

In overall, this year’s Sundown Marathon was executed rather successfully except for the extension in the 10 km running route. However, this was mentioned on the official website so it could be expected. This night race was definitely worth letting my sleep wait for. #sleepcanwait

10km Finisher Medal

Final Thoughts

Brimming with the runners high of finishing my first race this year, I made a promise to myself to participate in more races that would provide me more unique experiences like this night race. And of course, all of these exciting adventures would be shared here as well. Till my next write-up, continue chasing after new experiences and have a great day ahead!
