More about this event
The Kawerau King of the Mountain is an approximately 8km run up and down Mount Putauaki in Kawerau, organised by the Kawerau Harrier Club.
The race starts at Firmin Field, Waterhouse St, Kawerau. The route up and down the mountain is marked, and you must go through the checkpoint at the top of the mountain. The summit of Putauaki is 852 metres above sea level.
The first race took place in 1955, the year after the mill town of Kawerau laid its first foundations. A simple bet made by a couple of locals as to who could be first up and down Putauaki (Mt. Edgecumbe) laid down the first gauntlet with Jim Chadwick the first ever Kawerau King that year.
Since 1955 the race has seen copious challenges eventuate with numerous elite sports athletes rising to the challenge, along with a plentiful quantity of ambitious mountain runners looking to crack their own goals.
